Whoever thought having a photoshoot in a maze was a good idea, especially in 40mph winds? As I stood in the middle of a sea of towering sunflowers, trying to navigate my way to the giant swing, I couldn't help but laugh at the challenge. It was one of those “what have I gotten myself into?” moments, but it turned out to be the most fun I’ve had in a long time!
The idea for a sunflower mini session came to me when I stumbled upon the stunning Balgone Estate—a 90-minute drive from Glasgow, but completely worth it to create these unique images for business owners. Beforehand, I asked each business owner which props they’d like to use: the giant swing, a chair, colourful doors, or the giant seesaw. Some even brought along their own props, like laptops, journals, and books, making each session a true reflection of their brand. It was amazing to see how each setup evolved, with everyone adding their own personal touch to the scenes.
The wind was definitely a force to be reckoned with. At one point, I was running around trying to keep props from flying away while making sure my camera gear stayed safe! Windy days can create stunning images. Sure, hair might not play nice, amplifying the full Beyoncé effect, but they also bring dramatic clouds and pockets of sunlight that create beautiful, natural light. I even had a bit of a wrestle with the reflector—it was like battling a sail, and thank goodness for Angela assisting me so we didn’t have a photographer version of Mary Poppins through the sunflowers! Chasing a reflector through a maze was not on my to-do list.
Despite the weather, the clients were absolute troopers, and the day was filled with so much laughter. Linzi gave us all a giggle when she disappeared face-first into the sunflowers, and Ina pushed her comfort zone, braving the giant seesaw just to capture that incredible shot high above the flowers. Everyone embraced the chaos, and the wind added a playful, unexpected element that made each photo unique. There was something so freeing about letting go of control and just going with whatever the day threw at us.
